A strategy by Rice bioengineer Gang Bao to combine moth-derived viruses with magnetic nanoparticles to deliver CRISPR-Cas9 machinery for therapy was the subject of a News and Views article in the February 2019 issue of Nature Biomedical Engineering. Bao and his team want to use the large viral containers from the alfalfa looper moth to deliver payloads to target tissues. Magnets are used to activate the viral particles once they reach their target tissue. Bao is the Foyt Family Professor of Bioengineering and associate dean for research and innovation at the George R. Brown School of Engineering.
