Islamophobia in America is focus of Rice U. discussion
Experts will analyze topic at Islamophobia Resistance Campaign event March 7

HOUSTON – (March 1, 2019) – Islamophobia scholars Khaled Beydoun, a law professor at the University of Arkansas, and Craig Considine, a lecturer in Rice University’s Department of Sociology, will take center stage for “Demystifying Islamophobia in the Age of Trump,” a conversation about the origins of modern Islamophobia and possible solutions. The discussion will center on the current administration but also address Islamophobia coming from the left and center of the political spectrum.

The March 7 event, hosted by Rice’s Islamophobia Resistance Campaign, will take place at 7 p.m. in Sewall Hall on the Rice campus. It is free and open to the public.

What: “Demystifying Islamophobia in the Age of Trump,” a conversation between Islamophobia scholars Khaled Beydoun and Craig Considine.

When: 7 p.m. March 7.

The conversation will focus on the dynamics of Islamophobia in modern U.S. society. Bedyoun and Considine will share findings from their most recent books and deconstruct many of the most damaging stereotypes that drive today’s prevailing discourse surrounding Muslims.

Beydoun will sign copies his latest book, “American Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots and Rise of Fear.” He is a leading scholar on Islamophobia, the “war on terror” and civil rights. He is a senior affiliated faculty member of the Islamophobia Research and Documentation Project at the University of California, Berkeley, and serves on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights’ Michigan Advisory Committee.

Considine is the author of the upcoming book “Islam in America: Exploring the Issues,” to be released in summer 2019, as well as “Muslims in America: Examining the Facts,” “Muhammad the Prophet of Love” and “Islam, Race, and Pluralism in the Pakistani Diaspora.” Considine is a proponent of religious pluralism as well as stronger Christian-Muslim relations.
