Kinder Institute experts to testify in Austin March 7

HOUSTON – (March 6, 2019) – Experts from Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research will provide testimony and take questions before the Texas House Committee on Urban Affairs on Thursday, March 7, at the state Capitol in Austin.

The hearing will begin at 8 a.m. in Room E2.010 and include Bill Fulton, director of the Kinder Institute, and Kyle Shelton, the institute’s director of strategic partnerships and author of the book “Power Moves,” which is about the city of Houston. Fulton and Shelton will discuss the growing population and economic power of the “Texas Triangle” along with demographic changes and housing and governance challenges facing Texas’ large cities.

The committee, chaired by Rep. Angie Chen Button, R-Richardson, will then take public testimony on bills dealing with governance and operation of municipal management districts, the authority of certain municipalities to foreclose a lien on property to recover certain expenses and the authority of certain municipalities to propose fire control and prevention and emergency medical services districts.
