The future of the North American Development Bank is topic at Rice’s Baker Institute

HOUSTON – (May 28, 2019) – U.S. Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) and Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock), North American Development Bank (NADB) Managing Director Alex Hinojosa and NADB Deputy Managing Director Calixto Mateos-Hanel will join a panel of experts at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy June 6 to examine the bank’s future under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s (USMCA) new trade arrangements.

The cost of attendance is $20 for the public, and registration is at www.bakerinstitute.org/events/2011. The event is hosted by the Baker Institute’s Mexico Center and the North American Development Bank.

Antonio Garza, former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, will moderate the luncheon keynote session featuring remarks by Cuellar and Arrington.

Tony Payan, the Françoise and Edward Djerejian Fellow for Mexico Studies at the Baker Institute and director of the Mexico Center, will give introductory remarks.

What: An event titled “The North American Development Bank and the Next Quarter Century.”

When: Thursday, June 6, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Registration begins at 9 and lunch will be served at 11:15.

Where: Rice University, James A. Baker III Hall, Doré Commons, 6100 Main St.

The North American Development Bank was created under the auspices of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to finance infrastructure projects that would ease the environmental burden of commercial activity along the U.S.-Mexico border. Over the last 25 years, the NADB has been both the object of proposed reforms and the hope of many for closer collaboration between the U.S. and Mexico. Today, NAFTA stands to be replaced by the USMCA, which presents new opportunities for the NADB, according to event organizers.
