Rice photographer Jeff Fitlow won first place in the University Photographers’ Association of America’s monthly photo competition for his cover image in the May 3 issue of the journal Science. The organization also featured Fitlow’s essay, “Tiny object, big project,” which detailed the tedious process to capture the award-winning photo, and he was featured as the “Member Spotlight” by the American Society of Media Photographers.
Julian West, who will join Rice this summer as an assistant professor of chemistry, has been named winner of an inaugural Early Career IUPAC-Zhejiang NHU International Award for Achievements in Green Chemistry, to be presented in Paris at the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry conference in July. West comes to Rice as a Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas scholar and will focus on designing chemical reactions for synthetic chemistry and cancer research through environmentally friendly processes.
