U.S. Rep. André Carson (D-Ind.), left, the second Muslim to be elected to the House, participated in a July 13 discussion at Rice on balancing religious and civil liberties with counterterrorism and national security efforts. Carson is the chairman of the House Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence and Counterproliferation.
The event was hosted by Rice’s Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance and the Center for the Middle East at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. Zahra Jamal, associate director of the Boniuk Institute, served as moderator.
