The Hispanic Association for Cultural Enrichment at Rice (HACER) hosted a new student reception Aug. 17 to introduce incoming freshmen and their families to the vibrant Hispanic community at Rice.
Hispanic faculty, staff, alumni and students spent several hours speaking to new students. The speakers included the first Hispanic person elected to the National Academy of Engineering: Richard Tapia, University Professor, the Maxfield-Oshman Chair in Engineering and a professor of computational and applied mathematics, whose annual Tapia Conference celebrates and promotes diversity in computing.
