Leadership scholar David Day joins Rice’s Doerr Institute

HOUSTON – (Sept. 17, 2019) – David Day, an expert on the science of team leadership, has been named a fellow at Rice University’s Doerr Institute for New Leaders.

Day, a professor of psychology and academic director of the Kravis Leadership Institute at Claremont McKenna College, studies organizational leadership, identity and leadership development.

“David Day’s work toward a science of leader development has been among the most impactful theoretical contributions in practice of developing leaders,” said Tom Kolditz, executive director of the Doerr Institute. “Day has agreed to help us refine our approach to leader development and to serve as an ambassador of our practice to other top leadership scholars, putting Rice front and center in university leader development.”

A fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the International Association of Applied Psychology and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Day has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, books and book chapters on leadership and leadership development.

“It is a great honor to be named as a fellow of the Doerr Institute for New Leaders,” Day said. “I look forward to engaging with the institute in any way I can to help advance its mission of developing leader skills and abilities in young people. That is truly a worthwhile endeavor. The opportunity to work with such a talented and inspirational group of students and staff will certainly be a very meaningful learning experience.”

His research on organizational leadership has been published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, the Journal of Management, the Academy of Management Journal and The Leadership Quarterly. Day serves on several editorial boards and as editor of The Leadership Quarterly Yearly Review.

His 2000 article titled “Leadership development: A review in context” received the 2010 Decennial Influential Article Award, which honors the most influential article published in The Leadership Quarterly 10 years earlier. He also was awarded the Walter F. Ulmer Jr. Applied Research Award from the Center for Creative Leadership in 2010 for outstanding, careerlong contributions to applied leadership research.

Day has held professorships at the Australia Business School, Singapore Management University, Penn State University and Louisiana State University.

Rice established the Doerr Institute in 2015 with significant support from alumni John and Ann Doerr. The institute’s mission is to “elevate the leadership capacity of Rice students across the university.” It is the country’s first professional leadership development program offered at no cost to all undergraduate and graduate students and is the premier leadership institute that provides individualized guidance from credentialed coaches for college students.
