Antonios Mikos, the Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering and a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, celebrated his 60th birthday with a Dec. 2 research symposium organized by friends, colleagues and former students in Orlando, Florida, in advance of the annual conference of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, Americas chapter. The event celebrated the impact Mikos has had on the field through his legacy of mentorship. A photo by Rice Public Affairs staff photographer Jeff Fitlow, along with graduate student Dan Sazer and bioengineer Jordan Miller, is among Science magazine’s “Favorite Science Photos of 2019.” The photo depicts a minuscule, 3D-printed vascular network that mimics the air sacs that deliver oxygen to blood vessels.
