Baker Health Policy Program to Look at Child Development

Rice’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center are co-sponsoring “Biological and Social Determinants of Child Development,” which is taking place through Jan. 21 in Baker Hall.

The workshop is the first event as part of the health initiative led by Alvin Tarlov, the Sid Richardson and Taylor and Robert H. Ray Senior Fellow in Health Policy at the Baker Institute. The research initiative aims to identify social and societal determinants of the health of the world’s population and to develop public policies that could contribute to a significant decrease in illness and increase in well-being and productivity.

The workshop is designed to stimulate research in early childhood development and is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Distinguished faculty from institutions around the country and Canada are covering neuro-biological, behavioral, social and health policy aspects of child development.

At the close of the workshop, following scientific presentations of research into the social and biological factors that shape childhood development, Tarlov will present the policy implications raised by the conference.
