George Marcus, professor, Dept. of Anthropology, was the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Anthropological Association of Ireland held in Dublin, Ireland, Dec. 11. The theme of the conference was the Long-term Impact of Postmodernism on Anthropological Research.
Tayfun Tezduyar, the James F. Barbour Professor in Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science and chair, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, gave an invited lecture at the U. of Tokyo in December. A day after the lecture Tezduyar gave an introductory short course on finite element methods in flow simulation and modeling jointly with Professor Genki Yagawa from U. of Tokyo. The short course, intended for an audience with diverse backgrounds, was organized by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. During his visit Tezduyar also had technical discussions with several faculty members of the U. of Tokyo on future collaborations.
Susan Wood, professor of English, Dept. of English, had a poem, Analysis of the Rose as Sentimental Despair, selected by Rita Dove for Best American Poetry 2000 to be published in 2000 by Scribners. This series is published every year under the general editorship of David Lehmann.
