James A. Castañeda, professor,
Dept. of Hispanic & Classical Studies, delivered a paper
titled “Sor Juana y la Comedia de Enredo” in Seville,
Spain, July 23 at a meeting of the Asociación Hispánica
de Humanidades, and another titled “Lo Universal del
Quijotismo” Aug. 4 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the
82nd annual convention of the American Association of Teachers
of Spanish and Portuguese.

Jane Chance, professor of English,
has published a new book, “Medieval Mythography: From
the School of Chartres to the Court at Avignon, A.D. 1177
to 1350”; vol. 2 of “Medieval Mythography”
(Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2000), xxvi +520
pp.; 38 black-and-white photographs; 19 tables, chronology
of medieval mythographers and commentary authors. She also
has published two encyclopedia entries, on “Christine
de Pizan” and “Mythography” in “Medieval
Folklore: An Encyclopedia of Myths, Legends, Tales, Beliefs
and Customs,” two volumes, ed. Carl Lindahl, John Lindow
and John MacNamara (Santa Barbara: ABC-Clio, 2000), 1:180-83
and 2:693-97.

Nicholas K. Iammarino, professor,
Dept. of Kinesiology, and Thomas O’Rourke, U. of Illinois,
presented a paper titled “Health Care Reform: Lessons
from Abroad” at the annual meeting of the American
Association for Health Education in Orlando, Fla., March
23.

John L. Margrave, the E.D. Butcher
Professor of Chemistry, and his wife attended the XVI International
Conference on Fluorine Chemistry at the U. of Durham in
England. He presented a lecture summarizing more than 50
years of research in fluorine chemistry titled “Fluoro-Graphite,
Fluoro-Coats, Fluoro-Blood, Fluoro-Diamond and Fluoro-Nanotubes.” During the summer, Margrave and his graduate students worked
with undergraduates, high school students and research associates
exploring a variety of new chemical reactions with fluorine,
which were described in oral and poster presentations for
the Aug. 11 program of the Rice Quantum Institute. The students
also assisted in the presentation of six chemical magic
shows for Houston libraries and high school summer programs
of the medical schools.

Angelo Miele, professor emeritus,
Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science,
lectured on “Optimization of Missions to Mars for Robotic
and Manned Spacecraft” at the third World Congress
of Nonlinear Analysts, Catania, Italy, July 19-26. The paper
was co-authored by Tong Wang, senior research scientist,
Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, and Salvator
Mancuso, guidance, navigation and control engineer, European
Space Agency, ESTEC Laboratory, Nordwiljk, Holland.

Stephen A. Zeff, the Herbert S.
Autrey Professor of Accounting and professor of managerial
studies, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, gave
a seminar titled “The Confrontation on International
Accounting Standards” at the 85th annual meeting of
the American Accounting Association, held in Philadelphia
Aug. 13-16.
