Faculty Council minutes

Minutes of Faculty
Council Meeting
Sept. 13, 8 a.m.

Present: Akin,
Ambler, Bayazitoglu, Cox, Dharan, Mutchler, Patten, Wilson,
Wittenberg and Zammito. Absent: Baker and Droxler.

The agenda consisted
of: (1) Election of Speaker, (2) Review of Issues Before
Council, (3) Report Regarding Terminations Because of Discontinued
Programs or Departments and (4) Membership Vacancies.

(1) Election
of Speaker: The meeting was called to order by Wilson, the
outgoing speaker. He then asked for nominations for the
2000-2001 Faculty Council speaker. Cox and Patten were nominated;
Cox withdrew. There being no other nominations, Patten accepted
the position. He announced that Faculty Council committee
appointments would be made over the next two weeks and asked
members to let him know on which committees they would like
to serve.

(2) Review of
Issues Before Council: Wilson distributed handouts reviewing
outstanding issues before council and, with the exception
of one issue, Interinstitutional Ph.D. Program in Biostatistics,
Patten asked council to study the information for later
consideration. After discussion, council unanimously agreed
that the program in biostatistics involves changes in staffing
and research opportunities but no substantial changes in
the program requiring further action by Faculty Council.

(3) Report Regarding
Terminations Because of Discontinued Programs or Departments:
Cox, the 1999-2000 chair of Faculty Council’s Policy
Committee, distributed this report. After a brief discussion,
members were asked to review it and e-mail their thoughts
to Cox within the next two weeks. It was suggested that
there should be a meeting of this year’s and last year’s
Policy Committee to further consider the report and the
suggestions or recommendations of individual council members.

(4) Membership
Vacancies: The first item of business at the next meeting,
which was set for noon Friday, Sept. 29, was to be the appointment
of new Faculty Council members. Positions formerly held
by Carl Caldwell, Fathi Ghorbel, Joan Rea and Jane Dailey
are vacant.

On behalf of
the membership, Patten thanked Wilson for his dedicated
commitment and leadership as Faculty Council speaker over
the past two years.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 a.m.
