RUPD
offering Rape Aggression Defense classes for Rice women
…………………………………………………………………
Three Rape Aggression
Defense sessions have been scheduled for the spring semester.
R.A.D., a risk-reduction
and self-defense training program, will be offered Monday
through Friday, Feb. 12-16, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and
March 12-17, from 5 to 8 p.m. The program will be offered
again April 17-27 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and one Friday,
from 6 to 9 p.m.
The classes
offered by the Rice University Police Department are open
to all Rice women, including students, faculty, staff, spouses
and dependents. The free program is available to women of
all ages. The youngest person trained through R.A.D. was
12; the oldest, 72.
R.A.D. is a
nationwide self-defense program that originated in 1989.
The program teaches realistic self-defense tactics and techniques.
The R.A.D. system is a comprehensive course for women that
covers awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance
in a classroom setting and then progresses on to the basics
of hands-on self-defense training.
Courses are
taught by certified R.A.D. instructors. Specific issues
that are covered include rape crimes, the steps involved
in taking a rape case to court, surviving and recovering
from violence, date-rape mentality and the profile of a
sexual-assault predator. Techniques taught include block
strikes, kicking and heel strikes. The final R.A.D. class
includes simulation exercises where class participants practice
the techniques they learned on instructors.
