Commenting on historical research becoming more and more
specialized, Gale Stokes, dean of the School of Humanities,
was quoted as saying theres a sense of grinding the
nuts into an ever finer powder.
Business Week
In an article about how to lead workers through a crisis,
Steve Currall, associate professor of management, psychology
and statistics at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of
Management, noted that managers should recognize that employees
deal with stress in different ways and should offer employees
some control over how they will cope in the wake of a crisis.

Jane Chance, professor of English, commented on author J.R.R.
Tolkien.

Richard Smalley, the Gene and Norman Hackerman Professor
of Chemistry and professor of physics, commented that to
the extent that there are solutions to practical problems
like disease, feeding the world and reconciling scarce energy
resources with increasing consumption, a remarkable number
of them can be solved only through nanotechnology.
CBS Marketwatch
An article mentioned Smalley as directing scientific breakthroughs
in carbon nanotechnology at Rice. Smalley commented that
Japan has been an important pioneer in the discovery and
development of carbon nanotechnology.

Morning News
An article mentioned nanoshell research by Jennifer West,
associate professor in bioengineering and chemical engineering,
and Naomi Halas, the Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical
and Computer Engineering and Chemistry. A photo of West
appeared.
An article quoted Currall as saying the Enron collapse is
not comparable to the collapse of the oil industry in the
1980s. Currall also commented on the human capital inside
of Enron. The article mentioned that about 150 Rice alumni
worked at Enron and that Rice is helping them find jobs.
Cheryl Matherly, director of career services, commented
on the outlook among alumni and graduating seniors.
A news brief featured research on the Southern and Northern
Lights by Patricia Reiff, professor of physics and astronomy.
Earl Black, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Political
Science, commented on the influence on statewide races in
Texas of President Bush, the economy and the campaign against
terrorism.
Houston Chronicle
An article mentioned David Cook, assistant professor of
religious studies, as having considered creating a new course,
Jihad and the End of the World, even before
the Sept. 11 attacks. Cook discussed the class.
An article featured Anthony Brandt, assistant professor
of composition, who wrote original music that supplemented
the PBS documentary Crucible of the Millennium.
Brandt discussed the composition.
Bala Dharan, the J. Howard Creekmore Professor of Management
at the Jones School, discussed management of Enrons
records by Arthur Andersen.
An article featured research on gamma ray bursts conducted
in part at Rice. Edison Liang, the Andrew Hays Buchanan
Professor of Astrophysics, discussed the results of their
research.
