Michael Barlow,
assistant professor, Dept. of Linguistics, organized a special
session on parallel concordancing at the North American
Symposium on Corpus Linguistics and Language Teaching held
in Boston March 23-25. Stephanie Burdine, a graduate
student in linguistics, presented a paper in the special
session on Parallel Concordancing in Language Teaching.
Amalia Mendes, a Fulbright scholar visiting Rice
from the University of Lisbon to work on corpus linguistics,
presented a paper titled The Polysemy of Portuguest
Psych-Verbs.
James A. Castañeda,
professor of Spanish, Dept. of Hispanic & Classical
Studies, delivered a talk on The Universality of the
Quixotic at the spring meeting of the Texas Foreign
Language Association in Laredo, March 31.
Sarah Ellenzweig,
assistant professor, Dept. of English, has been invited
to be a resident Ahmanson-Getty fellow at the UCLA Center
for 17th and 18th Century Studies, participating in a yearlong
program on history, theory and the subject of rights, ca.
1640-1848.
Thomas C.
Killian, assistant professor, Dept. of Physics &
Astronomy, has been selected as an Office of Naval Research
Young Investigator. The program is designed to attract young
scientists and engineers who show exceptional promise for
outstanding research and teaching careers. In a letter to
President Malcolm Gillis announcing the honor, Rear Admiral
Jay M. Cohen, chief of naval research, said We believe
that Young Investigators, including Dr. Killian, are the
best and brightest young academic researchers this country
has to offer.
Hamid Naficy,
professor, Dept. of Art & Art History, gave a talk titled
Modesty of/in Vision and Voice in Banietemads
Films at the University of Virginia conference on
Women and Iranian Cinema, March 30-April 1.
Stephen A.
Zeff, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Accounting
and professor of managerial studies, Jesse H. Jones Graduate
School of Management, gave a seminar on international accounting
standards at the Stern School, New York University, March
26.
