The Marching Owl Band surprised longtime MOBster John “Grungy” Gladu on Homecoming weekend with an announcement that the Rice Board of Trustees has officially named the MOB’s band hall in his honor. Centennial historian Melissa Kean presented Gladu with a sign for the John “Grungy” Gladu Band Hall in the new facility, located in the renovated Cox Fitness Center on the south end of historic Rice Stadium, and Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson joined Gladu and members of his family in unveiling the official building sign. Also honored at the event were other band hall naming-gift honorees Missy Ratner ’93 and Logan Ratner ’98, contributors of the Ratner Family Office of the Band Coordinator; Robert McDonald ’92 and ’94 and Laura Bess McDonald ’91 and ’93, donors for the McDonald Family Instrument Room; and Will and Julia Scheevel Price, ’04 and ’09, respectively, who funded audio visual improvements for the new band hall space.
