Baker Conference to Focus on U.S. Tax Reforms

Government officials and academicians gather today and Friday, Nov. 5 and 6,
to discuss possible reforms to the U.S. tax system during the fourth annual
conference of Rice’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy.

The two-day event, "Tax Reform for the Millenium," starts today at
10:30 a.m. with a keynote address by U.S. Rep. Bill Archer, R-Houston, in James
A. Baker III Hall. Archer is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Also scheduled to deliver keynote addresses during the first day of the conference
are Leonard Burman, deputy assistant secretary for tax policy at the U.S. Department
of the Treasury, and James A. Baker, III, 61st secretary of state and 67th secretary
of the treasury.

Burman’s speech will start at 2 p.m., while Baker will deliver his speech,
"Tax Reform: A National Imperative," during dinner. Both talks will
be in Baker Hall.

Panel discussions today and Friday will focus on a variety of issues.

A report will be published after the conference containing the academic papers
presented during the program.
