A collection
of essays, “19th Century Geographies: From the Victorian
Age to the American Century,” edited by Helena Michie,
professor of English and Ronald R. Thomas, was published
this fall by Rutgers University Press. The book features
articles by Betty Joseph, associate professor of
English; Ussama Makdisi, associate professor of history;
Robert Patten, the Lynette S. Autrey Professor in
Humanities; and an introduction and article by Michie. The
collection is based on a 1998 conference at Rice that was
sponsored by the Center for the Study of Cultures and a
variety of humanities departments.
