Natural
sciences dean accepts another term

Kathleen Matthews
has accepted another term as dean of the Wiess School of
Natural Sciences, Rice President Malcolm Gillis and Provost
Eugene Levy announced Jan. 10.

“Kathy’s
leadership — as abundantly reflected in the assessments
I received in the renewal survey — has been characterized
by energy, vision, tenacity and grace,” said Levy in
a letter to Wiess School faculty and staff. “The Wiess
School has benefited greatly from Kathy’s creative
leadership, and I am sure that the school will make even
more important strides during her next term.”

Matthews was
named dean of the school in 1998.

Rice
alum wins Houston Marathon

Rice graduate
Sean Wade ’89 won the 2003 HP Houston Marathon last
Sunday, completing the 26.2-mile race with a time of 2:24:43.

Wade came to
Rice on a tennis scholarship in 1986 and, influenced by
his roommates who ran track, started running his senior
year. He became one of Rice’s top distance runners.

A native of New
Zealand, Wade ran for the Kiwis in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
