GSA honors those who support grad students at Rice

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) has recognized several faculty, staff, students and friends of the university for their strong support of Rice graduate students with its service awards for 2018.

GSA logoGSA Faculty Teaching and Mentoring Award

Ashutosh Sabharwal, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Fabiola López-Durán, assistant professor of art history, received the GSA Faculty Teaching and Mentoring Award. This honor is presented to faculty members who demonstrate outstanding service to graduate student education.

GSA Faculty/Staff Service Award

Kathleen Canning, dean of humanities and the Andrew Mellon Professor of History, and Kim Hardy, graduate student and undergraduate program administrator in the Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering, received the GSA Faculty/Staff Service Award. This award is given to faculty and staff members who have gone beyond the call of duty to improve the quality of life for graduate students at Rice.

Robert Lowry Patten Award 

Graduate students Christoph Wagner, Emily Fulk, Joshua Hill, Mary Natoli, Tawana Robinson and Sydney Gibson won the Robert Lowry Patten Award, which is given in honor of Robert Patten, the Lynette S. Autrey Professor Emeritus in Humanities and former GSA faculty adviser. It recognizes graduate students who might not otherwise have been honored for their service and achievement on behalf of graduate students.

GSA Service Award

Graduate students Wai San Ng and Sarah Kim are the recipients of the GSA Service Award. They were chosen for their contributions of time, effort and service to improving graduate life and education at Rice.

Friends of Rice Graduate Students Award

Alumnus Kristjan Stone ’08 won the Friends of Rice Graduate Students Award, which is presented in recognition of efforts to enhance the lives of graduate students. This award honors people within and beyond the Rice community who may not otherwise be recognized for their service to graduate students.
