Houston Chronicle
An article about an Islam seminar at Rice appeared. Ussama
Makdisi, assistant professor of history, commented on the
historical context for the tensions between the United States
and parts of the Middle East. Allen Matusow, the William
Gaines Twyman Professor of History, noted that education
is key to understanding the Muslim world.

An article featured
Pierre Jalbert, assistant professor of composition and theory,
who won the 2001 Masterprize composition competition.

A review of
a performance directed by Sergiu Luca, the Dorothy Richard
Starling Professor of Violin, appeared.

Karim Al-Zand, visiting assistant professor at the Shepherd

David Cook,
assistant professor of religious studies, commented on potential

KHOU-TV
In a story about Latin music, Stephen Klineberg, professor
of sociology, noted that immigrants often connect with their
