Two
Hispanic writers to read works April 30

Two highly acclaimed Hispanic writers,
Ruben Martinez and Tony Diaz, will read from their latest works at 6:30 p.m.
April 30 in Farnsworth Pavilion, Ley Student Center.

Martinez is an associate professor
of creative writing at the University of Houston. His new book, “The New
Americans,” which is scheduled for release this fall, is a companion volume
to the landmark PBS television series on global migration produced by the makers
of “Hoop Dreams.”

Diaz is the author of the novel “The
Aztec Love God,” winner of the 1998 Nilon Award for Excellence in Minority
Fiction. Diaz has edited numerous essays and stories that have appeared in publications
such as the Los Angeles Times and the Houston Chronicle.

He edited the anthology “Latino
Heretics.” He was a 1998-99 visiting scholar at the Center for Mexican-American
Studies at the University of Houston.

The reading is sponsored by the Hispanic
Association for Cultural Enrichment at Rice (HACER), the Society of Latino Alumni
of Rice (SOLAR) and the Office of Minority Affairs.

The reading is free and open to the
public and will be followed by a reception.
