Former president Gillis named
to board of U.S. federal agency

Malcolm Gillis, University Professor, the Ervin Kenneth Zingler Professor of Economics and professor of management, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Vietnam Education Foundation.

The foundation is an independent U.S. federal agency founded by Congress to promote closer relations between the U.S. and Vietnam. It offers opportunities for Vietnamese nationals to pursue graduate and postgraduate studies in science and technology in the U.S. and for American citizens to teach in the same fields of study in Vietnam.

The board is made up of six private citizens appointed by the White House, four members of Congress and the secretaries of state, treasury and education. Gillis will serve alongside Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Treasury Secretary John Snow; Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings; Sens. John Kerry and Chuck Hagel; Reps. George Miller and Chris Smith; Frank Jao, president and chief executive officer, Bridgecreek Development Co.; Marilyn Patillo, professor of clinical nursing, The University of Texas–Austin; Charles Nguyen, dean of engineering, Catholic University; Vo Van Toi, Tufts University; and Pham Gia Con, associate clinical professor of anesthesiology, the University of California–Los Angeles.
