Rice to host screening of ‘In Their Footsteps: An American Muslim Civil Rights Journey’

HOUSTON – (Feb. 13, 2019) – “In Their Footsteps: An American Muslim Civil Rights Journey,” a short documentary produced by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, will be presented by Rice University’s Islamophobia Resistance Campaign. The Feb. 21 screening on the Rice campus will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by sociology lecturer Craig Considine.

When:            7 p.m. Feb. 21.

Where:           301 Sewall Hall, Rice University, 6100 Main St.

The documentary, directed by M. Akram Shibly, details the story of 30 American Muslim civil rights leaders who visited Alabama in April 2018 to learn about the history of slavery, lynching, segregation and present-day racial injustice while reflecting on memories from their own lives. Some of the people featured in the documentary lived through segregation and Jim Crow laws.

During their journey, the Muslim leaders attended the inauguration of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery and learned from experts at Birmingham’s historic 16th Street Baptist Church, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Civil Rights Memorial.

Following the screening of the film, a panel discussion will feature Mustafaa Carroll, religious leader and civil rights activist; Summar McGee, president of the Black Student Association at Rice; Steve Morgen, associate rabbi of Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Houston; and Kimberly Orr, associate pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston. Considine will moderate the panel.

The event is sponsored by Rice’s Black Student Association and Muslim Student Association, the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Houston Coalition Against Hate. The event is free and open to the public, and food and refreshments will be provided.
