José Onuchic, the Harry C. and Olga K. Wiess Chair of Physics, a professor of physics and astronomy, of chemistry and of biochemistry and cell biology and co-director of Rice’s Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, was named an honorary professor at his alma mater, the Physics Institute of São Carlos, Brazil, in an April 12 ceremony at the institute. He was also awarded the institute’s medal of honor. Onuchic’s parents, Nelson and Lourdes de la Rosa Onuchic, were both prominent mathematics researchers at the sister Mathematics Institute.
