Richard Johnson honored by Rice Board of Trustees

The Rice Board of Trustees recently recognized Richard Johnson ’92, director of the Administrative Center for Sustainability and Energy Management, for his achievements and exceptional service to the university’s mission.

Johnson, who is also a professor in the practice of environmental studies in sociology, oversees a team of energy managers and analysts and has led the university’s charge toward becoming a sustainable campus since 2004. But Johnson’s positive affect at Rice “goes far beyond his technical job description,” according to a letter nominating him for the honor.

“He mentors students as a professor and administrative leader, writes several letters of recommendation for undergraduate and graduate students, expands students’ world views related to sustainability and energy through teaching abroad during the summer, and works with other departments on campus to collaborate and create student projects and environmental initiatives,” the letter read.

Additionally, Johnson oversees and manages energy conservation programs and initiatives that save the university hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, according to the letter.

“Richard works tirelessly to improve Rice’s energy program to produce more efficient and environmentally friendly means of consumption,” the letter read. “Through these efforts, Richard has served the community by providing a wide range of educational opportunities in an engaged, supportive and visible role.”
