Kathleen Beckingham, professor of biochemistry and cell biology, was appointed to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s publications committee.

Sibani Lisa Biswal, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, received a 2007 Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research. The award is given to academic researchers early in their careers and will fund Biswal’s research on magnetic colloids.

Rice alumnus Sean Burnett ’06 will direct the Rice MBA and MBA for Professionals programs at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management. Burnett previously worked in management positions for Yum! Brands International and Outback Steakhouse, Inc.

Naomi Halas, the Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and professor of chemistry, is a Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation 2007 cancer grant recipient for her project ”Nanoengineered Vectors for Targeted Deliver-Triggered Release of Gene Therapies for Various Cancers.”

The ADVANCE Leadership Opportunities award was given to Ching-Hwa Kiang, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, to attend the ”Foundation of Leadership Workshop” hosted by the Center for Creative Leadership.

Anne Papakonstantinou, clinical assistant professor in natural science, and Richard Parr, director of educational technology and secondary education, were featured speakers at the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching in San Antonio in June.

James Tour, the Chao Professor of Chemistry, professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and professor of computer science, received the 2007 Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society. Tour and Seiichi Matsuda, the E. Dell Butcher Chair in Chemistry and professor of biochemistry and cell biology, received George R. Brown Awards for Superior Teaching.

Bruce Weisman, professor of chemistry, has been honored with the Nano50 Products Award for Model NS1 NanoSpectralyzer, Applied NanoFlourecence, LLC.
