The event, hosted by the Baker Institute’s Center for the United States and Mexico, is open to the public. Registration is $20.

Who: Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca, governor of the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico.

What: An event titled “The State of Tamaulipas: A Conversation with Gov. Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca.”

When: Friday, Feb. 7, 8:30-10 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 8.

Where: Rice University, James A. Baker III Hall, Kelly International Conference Facility, 6100 Main St.

Few states represent the complexity of Mexico as well as Tamaulipas, according to event organizers. Abutting the Texas border in northeast Mexico, Tamaulipas has long been a hub of drug trafficking and a major passageway for undocumented migration, even as it has evolved into a thriving industrial state that hosts a major seaport and Mexico’s richest shale reserves. Nearly 60% of all trade between the U.S. and Mexico moves through the territory.

The public must RSVP for the event at www.bakerinstitute.org/events/2049. The social media hashtag for the event is #BakerTamaulipas.

Members of the news media who want to attend should RSVP to Jeff Falk, director of national media relations at Rice, at jfalk@rice.edu or 713-348-6775.
