RUPD offers tips to prevent bicycle thefts
Due to an increase in bicycle thefts, the Rice University Police Department (RUPD) is collecting and securing unlocked and unregistered bicycles on campus. To help reduce the risk of bicycle theft, RUPD offers the following tips:
* Use a lock whenever you park your bicycle. RUPD recommends a u-bolt lock because it is more difficult to defeat than other conventional chain or cable locks. While no lock is foolproof, the time and effort involved may make it less likely that a thief will choose a bicycle with a u-lock.
* Always secure your bicycle to one of several designated bike racks on campus.
* Register your bicycle. Bicycle registration is a free service offered by RUPD and is required by university regulations. It can also aid in the recovery of stolen bicycles. Registration can be entered online at http://rupd.rice.edu/eservices.cfm.
* Call 713-348-6000 or any blue light emergency phone to report suspicious persons or activities near the bicycle racks.
