Last week, 18 students from De La Salle High School in Chihuahua, Mexico, visited Rice along with three teachers and their school counselor. One of their teachers, Omar Ochoa, was a participant in the 2007 Advanced Placement Summer Institute, an annual program for middle and high school teachers from around the globe hosted by the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies.
Ochoa was impressed with his experience and wanted his students to learn more about Rice and student life at U.S. universities. He discussed possibilities with his school’s counselor, Ricardo Martínez, who contacted Rice and worked with David Vassar, assistant to the president, to orchestrate the students’ visit. Vassar, with the support of the Rice Office of Admission, arranged for the students to take a tour of Rice, attend selected classes and have lunch in the residential colleges. They took time out of their busy day to take a picture in the Sallyport. The students are part of a scholarship program that pays for their tuition at any U.S. university of their choice. |
