Rice triples number of United Way contributors
There’s still time to donate and win
FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS
In its eighth week, Rice’s 2008-09 campaign for the United Way continues to set new records, having raised $113,781 to date from 476 donors, more than triple the number of contributors the campaign had last year. The current total number of lead donors (those contributing $1,000 or more) is 46, more than 31 percent higher than the previous year’s mark.
The President and Provost division holds the campuswide lead in total pledges ($26,939). Natural Sciences exceeds all other divisions in number of lead donors (11). Public Affairs has become the first university division to achieve 100 percent participation (followed closely by Investments with 74 percent).
“For many of us, this is a traditional season of gift-giving,” said Chris Del Conte, campaign chairman and athletics director. “And I am so proud that so many Rice employees have included the United Way on their holiday gift lists. Supporting the United Way helps our neighbors in need and improves the community in which we live and work.”
To encourage Rice faculty and staff to continue to pledge, the campaign committee will continue to hold weekly prize drawings right through the upcoming winter break. Anyone who makes a pledge to the United Way is eligible.
“There are several great prizes left, including four football season tickets, so if you haven’t already, make your pledge today,” Del Conte said.
Winners of this week’s prize drawings are Diana Welch (Natural Sciences division) and Bart Sinclair (Engineering).
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, the community has never needed the United Way more, and the United Way has never had a greater need for strong support from Rice. To make a pledge via automatic payroll deductions throughout 2009, or contribute by cash, check or credit card in the 2008 tax year, visit www.rice.edu/unitedway.
