Ridin’ the storm out

This workstation was set up in the Founders Room in Lovett Hall Monday
afternoon as members of Rice’s Crisis Management Team (CMT) prepared to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Edouard, which
was forecast to bring heavy rains and high winds to the Houston area the following morning.

Nonessential employees were dismissed at 3 p.m.,
while other staff continued preparing the campus for Edouard, ensuring
that storm drains were cleared and pumps were working properly, checking emergency power
and water and generally securing the campus. Rice provided food and shelter for student-athletes and graduate students who were on campus this week.

The CMT held several conference calls and used Rice’s emergency communications system to notify employees and students that the university would be closed Tuesday.
Regular updates were posted on www.rice.edu.

Fortunately, Tropical Storm Edouard was far less fierce than expected, bringing much-needed rain to Houston but little else.
