Rice’s McStay to have play read at Ike fundraiser Sept. 26

FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS

A new short play by Kay McStay, associate editor and business manager of the Rice-based journal SEL Studies in English Literature 1500-1900, will be among several stage readings in Galveston Sept. 26 as part of a Hurricane Ike fundraiser for Island ETC, a Galveston theatrical company that suffered losses during the storm.

McStay is among a group of Houston-area playwrights who will present readings of new short dramatic and comedic plays about Ike.

McStay’s play, “IkeQ,” pits siblings against one another just before landfall. “The unemployed postdoctoral Ron, who is staying with university administrator sister Carol, wants to prove a point by taking self-scoring IQ and emotional tests while she’s focused on storm preparation,” said McStay. “Will sibling rivalry or cooperation lead up to Ike’s landfall?”

“Eyes on the Tempest — The Ike Plays” will be at the Strand Theatre, 2317 Mechanic St., at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10, and reservations can be made by calling the theater, 409-762-3556 or 888-762-3556.
