Volunteers needed for Nov. 6 computer giveaway
Community Involvement Center seeks help with donation project
FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS
Rice’s Community Involvement Center (CIC) is seeking volunteers to help Houston-area nonprofit Comp-U-Dopt distribute donated computers to Houston families Nov. 6.
Comp-U-Dopt collects used computers, refurbishes them and donates them to children from low-income families. Both child and parents undergo a short training program when they receive one of the refurbished computers.
Rice recently donated 40 computers to Comp-U-Dopt; they are among 100 refurbished computers that are to be given to children on Nov. 6 at Lakewood Elementary School.
Approximately 20 volunteers are needed to assist with the training and distribution of the computers on the morning of Nov. 6. Volunteers will work directly with children and parents to follow along with a teacher as the material is presented. Volunteers will assist families with Open Office, Internet usage and several education applications. No specific technical skills or prior knowledge of the programs is required.
