This weekend the Shepherd School of Music will open its doors to music-lovers young and young at heart as Rachel Buchman and the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra tell the story of classical music’s Cat in the Hat: Till Eulenspiegel, an impudent trickster who originated in German folklore. Richard Strauss captures the mischief and merrymaking in “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks,” one of the most beloved works for symphony orchestras.

“Strauss really brings to life this legendary rogue with his energetic music,” said Buchman, lecturer in music and children’s music specialist. “There will be a few other musical surprises as well!”

The one-time-only hourlong performance begins at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 in Alice Pratt Brown’s Stude Concert Hall, and seating is first come, first served. Buchman will narrate the story as Larry Rachleff, the Walter Kris Hubert Professor of Orchestra Conducting, conducts. The program is recommended for ages 6 and up, but all are welcome.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, is presented by the Shepherd Society.
