Rice to screen three films starring Penelope Cruz
Rice University’s Spanish Resource Center will screen three films starring Spanish actress Penelope Cruz this semester for a series titled “Tres Visiones de España, Tres Directores, Una Atriz: Penelope Cruz” (“Three Visions of Spain, Three Directors, One Actress: Penelope Cruz”).
“La Celestina,” directed by Gerardo Vera, will be shown Aug. 29. Based on the late medieval classic by Fernando de Rojas, the film tells a story of two lovers brought together with the help of a sorceress, but their happiness is short-lived.
Fernando Trueba’s “La Niña de tus Ojos” (“The Girl of Your Dreams”) will be shown Sept. 26. Cruz plays a 1930s movie star working in Nazi-era Germany who catches the eye of Joseph Goebbels.
Woody Allen’s “Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona” will screen Oct. 24. The 2008 romantic comedy involves two visiting Americans, a romantic tryst and an emotionally unstable wife. Cruz won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance.
The series is free and open to the public. All films will be shown in their original language with English or Spanish subtitles at 6:30 p.m. in Sewall Hall, Room 303, on the Rice University campus. For directions, go to www.rice.edu/maps/maps.html.
