Rice University conference will focus on transnationalism and Asia Feb. 18-19

The phenomena associated with the movement of individuals, peoples, ideas, practices and goods across the borders and boundaries of Asia and beyond will be explored during a two-day Transnational Asia Graduate Student Conference Feb. 18-19 at Rice University. Rice’s Chao Center for Asian Studies will host the conference in the Kyle Morrow Room on the third floor of Fondren Library, 6100 Main St. For directions, go to http://www.rice.edu/maps/maps.html.

The conference, organized by Rice graduate students, is free and open to the public. It will be held Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Anne Allison, the Robert O. Keohane Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Duke University, will deliver the keynote address at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Allison is the author of three noted books: “Nightwork: Sexuality, Pleasure and Corporate Masculinity in a Tokyo Hostess Club,” “Permitted and Prohibited Desires: Mothers, Comics and Censorship in Japan” and “Millennial Monsters: Japanese Toys and the Global Imagination.” She will read from a soon-to-be-published book, tentatively titled “Soul on Strike: Security, Precarity and Remaking the Social in 21st-Century Japan.”
