The American Culinary Federation/Texas Chefs Association (ACF/TCA) will present three awards to Rice University’s Housing and Dining Services at a July 21 luncheon in Dallas. Ben Fonbuena, Rice’s executive chef culinary educator, was named Chef of the Year for 2011 for his teaching skills, participation in charity events and volunteer work during and after hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike, as well as for mentoring Houston high school students. South Servery’s Yvonne Sterns has been named Pastry Chef of the Year for her work over the past year and for her volunteer work with the ACF/TCA. Rice University as a whole was named ACF/TCA Contributor of the Year for serving as an exam site since 2003 and assisting chefs with their practical exam certifications. Rice has 16 ACF/TCA certified chefs.
