Ancient climate event puzzle studied
The release of massive amounts of carbon from methane hydrate frozen under the seafloor 56 million years ago has been linked to the greatest change in global climate since a dinosaur-killing asteroid presumably hit Earth nine million years earlier. New calculations by researchers at Rice University show that this long-controversial scenario is quite possible. Gerald Dickens, professor of Earth science, is quoted.

Saints fans among top ‘Tweeters,’ too
Midway through the NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions have been tweeted most by football fans during game action. Using millions of Twitter subscribers as living “sensors,” engineers from Rice University and Motorola Mobility announced in October that they found a way to monitor fans’ levels of excitement and to keep track of the action in NFL games via Twitter. Lin Zhong, assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering and of computer science, is quoted.
