MFAH to screen Ping Sun’s movie pick ‘Aftershock’ Jan. 30

Each year the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) selects notable Houstonians to present a favorite film as part of its “Movies Houstonians Love” film series. Rice University Representative Y. Ping Sun chose the film to be screened at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 — “Aftershock.”

“Aftershock” is an epic story of a family separated as a result of the great Tangshan earthquake of 1976, which claimed 255,000 lives, injured 160,000 and destroyed 650,000 Chinese homes. Seven-year-old twins are trapped beneath the rubble, prompting rescue workers to believe that freeing one child will most likely kill the other. The siblings’ mother makes the agonizing choice to save her son, not knowing that her daughter witnesses the decision and miraculously survives.

Sun will introduce the film, which will be in Mandarin with English subtitles. Tickets are $7. MFAH members, students with IDs and senior citizens receive a $1 discount. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the MFAH box office, at the visitor services desk in the Law and Beck buildings during museum hours or online at www.mfah.org. Films are shown in the Brown Auditorium Theater of the MFAH Caroline Wiess Law Building, 1001 Bissonnet St.

“Movies Houstonians Love” has two primary goals: to provide speakers with the opportunity to show another side of themselves, and to introduce new audiences to the year-round film programming offered in the museum’s state-of-the-art Brown Auditorium Theater.
