Brazilian ambassador to US to speak Feb. 2 at Baker Institute

Mauro Vieira, the Brazilian ambassador to the United States, will discuss “U.S.-Brazil Relations in the 21st Century” Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. The lecture will be in Baker Hall’s Kelly International Conference Facility.

Before his appointment in Washington, Vieira served as Brazilian ambassador to Argentina. He has also held several positions at the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations, including chief of staff to the secretary-general and chief of staff to the minister of external relations. From January 2003 to May 2006, he was the representative of the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations to the board of directors of the Itaipu Binacional hydroelectric power plant.

Vieira has also held positions in the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Social Security and Assistance. His other overseas postings include Montevideo, Mexico City and Paris.

Vieira holds a law degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and graduated from Instituto Rio Branco, the Brazilian diplomatic academy.
