College students throughout Texas are eligible to compete in the College DJ Battle at Rice University March 28.
The Houston Enriches Rice Education (HERE) Project will hold the competition from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Grand Hall of Rice Memorial Center, 6100 Main St. The winner of the competition will receive the DJ Screw Legend Award, named after the late Robert Earl “DJ Screw” Davis Jr., a popular disc jockey in the Houston hip-hop community who died in 2000.
The winner will also get to play a one-hour set on The Groove KPFT 90.1 FM during #PhatFreeMondays and will be featured in Tre Magazine and on the HERE website.
The competition will be hosted by ZIN and will be judged by Bobby Phats, CarefreeBX2TX, DJ Ebonix and DJ Supastar. DJ Chill will be guest DJ for the event, which is part of the of the Awready!: Houston Hip-Hop Conference. Admission is free.
Students who want to enter should send an email to here@rice.edu with the subject line “2012 College DJ Battle nominee” and include their real name, their DJ name, their email and contact number.
The recording of the competition will become part of the ongoing HERE Project Archival Collection at Rice to preserve the cultural knowledge produced and consumed in the Houston area.
The HERE Project is an innovative curricular and research initiative that advances Rice’s relationship to the larger Houston community and enhances faculty research and both undergraduate and graduate education.
