Editor’s note: Jordan Schermerhorn will be interviewed about her trip to Africa on NPR’s “On Point” from 9 to 10 a.m. Central Time Monday, July 9, from the studio at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy.
Recent Rice graduate Jordan Schermerhorn is on the road with New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof in Africa, where she is tweeting and blogging about her experiences in Lesotho and Malawi. Read Schermerhorn’s first blog, about HIV in Lesotho, at the link below, and come back to this page over the next few weeks to access Schermerhorn’s additional blogs from Africa.
Schermerhorn won Kristof’s annual “Win-a-Trip” competition and will spend up to two weeks with the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist. The bioengineering major is making her first trip outside the United States.
Schermerhorn’s essay about a solo journey to Big Bend National Park, in which she described encountering poverty across the border in Mexico, so impressed Kristof that he named her the winner in March. The pair landed in Lesotho earlier this week and will make their way to Malawi, where they expect to meet another Rice alumna, Jocelyn Brown ’10, who is introducing the bubble continuous positive airway pressure device on behalf of Rice 360˚: Institute for Global Health Technologies. The device was developed by Rice students at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen.
