Rice President David Leebron (left) joined more than 100 well-wishers March 22 for a retirement reception in honor of Herb Ward, Rice’s Foyt Family Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. Ward, a leading authority on hazardous waste remediation, joined Rice in 1966, helped found the university’s academic programs in environmental science and engineering and played a key role in building the university’s internationally recognized program in environmental remediation technology. He will retire June 30.
