‘Cargo Space’ mobile arts residency and art space to be unveiled at Rice Sept. 26

HOUSTON – (Sept. 18, 2013) – Following a yearlong transformation, a former Rice University transit bus will be unveiled to the public as a mobile arts residency and art space at a Sept. 26 open house at Rice. Called “Cargo Space,” the bus will host artists from Houston and around the world.

What:             Unveiling of “Cargo Space,” a mobile arts residency and art space.

Who:               Cargo Space is the brainchild of Christopher Sperandio, an assistant professor of visual and dramatic arts at Rice.

When:             Thursday, Sept. 26, 8-10 p.m.

Where:           Sewall Hall loading dock, near campus Entrance 3, at the intersection of Main and Cambridge streets. Parking is available in the Founder’s Court Visitor Lot directly in front of Sewall Hall. For a map, visit rice.edu/parking.

Sperandio along with Rice students, alumni and community volunteers built the Cargo Space using green materials and processes. It has a bunk room that sleeps up to six, a lavatory, a dinette and a kitchenette with a refrigerator and sink. The goal is to host artists of all stripes and cultural workers for extensive road trips across the United States and events around Houston.

Cargo Space will have its first commission this fall with the Hardesty Arts Center in Tulsa, Okla. During October, Sperandio will travel to and from Tulsa, along with six artists from Houston to stage an exhibition there.

Cargo Space is funded in part by the Humanities Research Center, Rice’s Office of Parking and Transportation and the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts.
