Prominent Chinese history expert to give talk at Chao Center Oct. 18

Chinese history expert Jeffrey Wasserstrom will present “Shanghai and Hong Kong as Competing and Connected Cities, 1843-2013” at noon Oct. 18 as a guest speaker for Rice’s Chao Center for Asian Studies. The public event will be in the Mechanical Laboratory Building, Room 209, and will include a Q-and-A session.

Wasserstrom is the Chancellor’s Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine, author and frequent commentator on Chinese politics, culture and society. His most recent books are “Chinese Characters: Fast-Changing Lives in a Fast-Changing Land” (2012), which he co-edited with Angilee Shah; “China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know” (2010); and “Global Shanghai, 1850-2010” (2009).

He is editor of the Journal of Asian Studies and one of the two Asia editors at the Los Angeles Review of Books. He also is a member of Dissent magazine’s editorial board and an associate fellow at the Asia Society.
