Chinese movie star speaks at Rice

Liu Xiaoqing, an award-winning actress in China, made an appearance at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy April 10 as the Liu Distinguished Visitor of Rice’s Chao Center for Asian Studies. Liu held a news conference about her April 12 performance at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. After the news conference, Liu engaged in a conversation with Lily Foster, the mother of two Rice Owls, who is also a well-known movie star and has appeared with Liu in a couple of movies, and then participated in a Q&A with the audience. More than 200 people, including many Rice students and Chinese news media representatives, attended the session, which was conducted in Chinese and hosted by Rice University Representative Y. Ping Sun, who also gave Liu a tour of the campus.

Liu has won numerous awards at Chinese film festivals and holds the record for the most number of awards in the actress categories of the Hundred Flowers Award (China’s equivalent of the Golden Globes) – three for best actress and one for best supporting actress.

The Liu Distinguished Visitor Lecture Series was funded by Cindy and Frank Liu, who also purchased 200 tickets for the audience to attend Liu’s play at the Hobby Center.
