The Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP) and Rice Athletics collaborated to provide fun and educational mathematics activities for 4,000 third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students from local schools before the Rice/St. Thomas men’s basketball game Dec. 18. RUSMP led activities that included constructing giant polyhedra from giant triangles and tossing beach balls with math problems into the audience for students to catch and compute. Students also participated in RUSMP’s virtual math tour of the Rice campus. They calculated the age of William Marsh Rice, the university’s founder, at his death. They described geometric shapes and noted symmetries across the campus. Students calculated the number of eyes, beaks and talons on three owlets pictured in a popular photo taken by Rice’s Tommy LaVergne.
