Rice 2nd among US universities in new international ranking

Rice University is one of only two U.S. schools that made Times Higher Education’s 2015 list of the 100 most international universities in the world.

Rice is ranked No. 98 on the list; Massachusetts Institute of Technology is No. 39. All of the other schools in the top 100 are from other countries, including No. 1-ranked École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.

“Both the diversity of a university’s student body and the extent to which its academics collaborate with international colleagues are signs of how global an institution really is, and these factors are among the 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that allow Times Higher Education to produce the most comprehensive global university rankings in the world,” said Chris Parr, social media reporter for Times Higher Education’s online channels.

The single most influential criterion is research influence, which is measured by the number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars around the world.

Among other factors are the ratios of international students and faculty to domestic students and faculty, the university’s reputation for research among its peers, the university’s ability to help industry with innovations and inventions (as indicated by research income from industry), academic reputation and the proportion of research papers published with a co-author from at least one other country.
